Disability Terms

This is a list of terms that some people may wish to understand more thurrally in the context for which I intend them. I will update this list as needed and if anyone would like clarification on something please let me know.

Advocate: One who communicates the needs and rights of a group or individual. Aware of the social and legal issues around the said group or individual and can utilize them to insure that discrimination does not occur.

Accommodation: An alteration to a test, assignment, location or other publicly utilized area that allows access to a person with a disability that does not fundamentally change the set purpose of that item or place.

CCTV: Closed Caption Television is a tabletop device used to enlarge and change the contrast of small print or pictures to a level that can be seen by a person with low vision.

Disability Pride: The taking of one's own disability or disabilities as a part of themselves and not as a stigma of inability or shame.

Empowerment: To encourage people to do their best and meet their fullest potential without the use of coercion, shame or pity.

Inclusion: A space or community that is welcoming and accepting of all forms of disability, race, gender identity , social economic status country of origin or any other category society places on people. A safe and non judgmental space.

Pico: Is a hand-held electronic magnifier that is used to read a small section of text when in class or at a store. (Pico is a brand name and not the kind I have now but I have been using it for so long is is stuck and sounds better than Optolec.)

Social Justice: The struggle against hateful actions, gender and racial prejudice, hate crimes and other social concerns in communities.
